Stuart Sklar is a shareholder in the law firm of Fabian, Sklar and King, located in the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Farmington Hills. He has litigated hundreds of cases where fire and explosion origin, cause and responsibility were at issue, and is a nationally recognized expert in this highly specialized field. He has obtained millions of dollars in settlements and verdicts on behalf of his clients.
He is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI), and is the only attorney representing policyholders, and victims injured or killed in fires or explosions appointed as a principal member of the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee on Fire Investigations, responsible for NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations. Mr. Sklar has been active in the development of every edition of NFPA 921 since 2001. He is also a principal member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications responsible for NFPA 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator.
Mr. Sklar has given expert testimony on fire scene investigation methodologies, and has testified before a subcommittee of the Michigan Legislature on pending insurance legislation.
He is regularly asked to speak on fire litigation issues in the United States, Canada, and England by organizations such as the United States Department of Justice, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), the British Fire Service College, the Insurance Committee on Arson Control (ICAC), the American Bar Association (ABA) the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), and the Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ).
He is a co founder of the International Symposium on Fire Investigation Science and Technology (ISFI). ISFI is a biennial professional symposium specializing in the application of modern fire science and technology to fire investigations and analyses, and is designed to bring together fire investigation professionals from around the world to present and discuss the latest in fire investigation science, research, technology and methodology.
He was selected as a “Michigan Super Lawyer” by Law and Politics magazine every year since 2006, a “Top Lawyer” by dbusiness Magazine, a “Leader in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly, was elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates, and is the recipient of the National Association of Fire Investigator’s Distinguished Service Award.
